Craftsmen place flakes of gold leaf and aluminum leaf in a bamboo pipe, and sprinkle this delicately to create the designs. This traditional method, unique to Japan, is also used in period artworks such as scrolls and folding screens, as well as for the sliding doors of historical buildings.
