Product development 1 : Scratched leaf
2016.08
Using a special brush, scratches are applied to the metal leaf to create an aged effect. This is called, “Suri (scratched) leaf.”
The natural shine of the metal leaf itself is, of course, beautiful, but by adding subtle scratches, a new quality of light emerges. By toning down the metal leaf’s boldness, the finish takes on a calm, understated character, transforming it to a refined, contemporary presence, allowing it to blend naturally into both Japanese and Western spaces.
The process itself is simple, but it requires an extraordinary level of care and precision. If the scratches are too regular, they can look like a printed pattern, but if they are too roughly done, the elegance is lost. By carefully adjusting this balance, each piece is finished by hand. Another distinctive feature is the ability to create new designs by applying different colors over the scratched areas.
This is an original technique developed by Rekiseisha, offering endless possibilities.
