Johkokuji

2016.08

Johkokuji is an ancient and honorable temple located in the Naka district of Hiroshima city. In 2006, we have reconstructed the main hall that has been entirely burnt due to a fire, Rekiseisha was in charge of reconstructing the inner wall and the ceiling. Buddhist temple and gold leaf is said to have an intimate connection in the Japanese culture. We have been working on the surroundings of the Buddhist altar that expresses a paradise land which will reflect special thoughts comes up within us. Brass leaf has been used for the wallpaper, we adopted for a “long long” by using Nanasai leaf on the creation to represent Rekiseisha on the ceiling. The handwritten illustrations has been drawn to the gold leaf on the ceiling, elaborating the whole structure to it’s fine details. When creating a new design, is it very important to have an understanding of Japanese traditional culture. By restoring the undersurface and because there is a foundation, you just have to be confident and deliver new things with it.
