世界各国で500以上のホテル・リゾーツを展開するヒルトン・ホテルズ＆リゾーツ。日本国内だけでもその加盟ホテルは20を数えます。そんな中にあって “いかにその土地らしさを表現できるか” ということを強く意識しているホテルのひとつがヒルトン広島。歴清社の金銀箔壁紙もふんだんに使用していただいています。設計に携われたHBA（Hirsch Bedner Associates）の上田良哉さんにお話を伺いました。「広島の豊かな自然や土地に根付く伝統工芸品をふんだんに取り入れながら、ひと目見ただけでも『これが広島のヒルトンだ』ということがわかる象徴的なデザインを多く取り入れること。それが重要なテーマでした。広島にはさまざまな素晴らしい工芸品がありますが、歴清社の箔はその代表的なもののひとつ。各エリアに採用しています」。例えば客室。ここではヘッドボードに箔壁紙を採用していますが、これはチップ状の洋金箔が敷き詰められた金紙の上に青いオーガンジーを貼り合わせた特注品。正面から見ると金、斜めから見ると青と見る角度によってまったく表情が異なる仕上がりになっています。アクセントとして広島を象徴する紅葉のモチーフを散りばめました。「バーやラウンジ、客室、レストラン、そしてチャペルなど、各エリアはそれぞれ違ったコンセプトを持っていますが、そのどの場所にも最適な箔があるのは歴清社ならでは。伝統的で美しい日本的な箔もあれば、コンテンポラリーな空間にふさわしい箔もある。ここまでのボリュームで歴清社の金銀箔壁紙を使わせてもらったのは初めて。改めてその対応力の高さやバリエーションの豊富さに驚かされます」。時の流れと共に少しずつ薄れゆく伝統や文化。それらを懐古的にならず、いかに現代とマッチさせながら残していけるか。ヒルトン広島は、そのひとつの解答を見ることができる場所と言っても過言ではありません。

Hilton Hotels & Resorts has more than 500 hotels and resorts all over the world and there are 20 members in Japan. One of the hotels that is strongly aware of “how to express the uniqueness of the location” is the Hilton Hiroshima. Rekiseisha’s metal leaf wallpaper is used a lot. Mr. Yoshichika Ueda of HBA (Hirsch Bedner Associates) involved in the design and talked about his thoughts.”A lot of traditional crafts rooted in Hiroshima’s rich nature and land were used and many iconic designs that could be understood easily as ‘this is the Hilton of Hiroshima were also used.’ It was an important theme. There are many wonderful crafts in Hiroshima, and the metal leaf of Rekiseisha is one of the most representative of them. I use it in each area.”For example, metal leaf wallpaper is used for the headboard of guest rooms. It is a custom-made product with blue organza pasted on gold paper filled with brass leaf chips. When it is seen from the front, it looks gold.  However, when it is seen from an angle, it looks blue. The appearance is completely different depending on the viewing angle. As an accent, we scattered the motif of Japanese maple leaves that symbolize Hiroshima.”Each area has a different concept: bar, lounge, guest rooms, restaurant and chapel, but every place has the perfect metal leaf of Rekiseisha. Rekiseisha has some traditional and beautiful Japanese metal leaf, while others are suitable for contemporary spaces. This is the first time I have used Rekiseisha’s metal leaf wallpaper in such a volume. I came to realize again how they handle our difficult requests and how they create their many original designs.”Traditions and culture are dwindling. How can we preserve them while matching them with the present without becoming nostalgic? It is no exaggeration to say that Hilton Hiroshima is a place where you can see one of the answers.
